What happens when I'm sent for a diagnostic test?

Why you're here

Your MSK clinician has directed you to this page because you need a test (or tests) to help them make a diagnosis and/or plan the best next steps for your care.

Examples include X-rays, MRI scans, or blood tests.

What happens next

We've outlined the process below, so you know what to expect. Many steps are managed by the test provider (the hospital or organisation carrying out your test), so are outside of Circle’s control.

Please bear with us if there’s a short wait before we receive your results and can continue your care pathway.

How you'll get your test

Your clinician will explain this to you, but depending on the type of test and the provider:

  • You may receive an appointment date and time directly from the provider
    OR
  • Your clinician may give you a form and ask you to attend a walk-in service as soon as possible to avoid delays.

Need help?

Your GP won't be able to help with any part of the diagnostics process so please don't contact them about this.

If you feel that too much time has passed since you were last contacted, or you have other questions about the process, please get in touch with us.

What happens with your results

Once your test results are back, we will contact you. One of the following will usually happen:

  • Follow-up appointment (often by telephone) to discuss next steps.
  • Referral to another service, if this was discussed previously and confirmed by your test.
  • Discharge from the MSK service with advice on managing your condition, if that was agreed at your last appointment.
